Dr. Paweł Szyperski, MD is in his 5th year of residency in Urology at the Department and Clinic of Urology of the University Hospital No. 2. Dr. Jan Biziel in Bydgoszcz. He spent the entire month of November on an internship in Madrid at the Urology Clinic of La Zarzuela University Hospital. We invite you to read his report from this trip.
During my stay in Madrid, I had the opportunity to improve my existing skills in the field of surgery using the da Vinci robotic system. I completed my internship under the supervision of a renowned FEBU urologist, Professor Ignacio Moncada Iribarren, Head of the Urology Clinic at La Zarzuela University Hospital. Prof. Moncada is one of the most experienced urological authorities, including: in the field of robotics. He is a well-known and widely respected person internationally. Author of numerous publications, winner of many awards, member of the board of ESGURS, EMA, ESHA, ESU, AESS, member of the European Association of Urology (EAU) and the American Urological Association (AUA). He is one of the leaders not only in the field of robotic urology, but also in reconstructive and sexual urology in Spain and Europe. He was recently nominated for the most prestigious sexual urology award in the world – ESSM Career Award 2024.
The internship allowed me to confront the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in the Urology Clinic of our Hospital with the prestigious La Zarzuela Urology Center in Madrid. Thanks to the kindness of Professor Moncada, I took an active part in robotic procedures using the da Vinci system: radical prostatectomy, adenomectomy, cystectomy and NSS (removal of the kidney tumor while sparing the organ). Under the supervision of experienced specialists, I improved my surgical skills using the da Vinci robotic system and learned the key nuances of robotic operations. I also had the opportunity to independently perform the treatments step by step under the supervision of prof. Moncada.
The internship was also an opportunity for me to learn about other (than da Vinci) robotic systems. I participated in procedures using the following systems: Hugo by Medtronic and Versius by CMR Surgical, learning the differences in the operation and use of these devices. Due to the fact that Madrid is an important urological center on the map of Europe, I had the opportunity to participate in urological procedures in other hospitals in this city. In addition to La Zarzuela Hospital, we managed to establish contact and cooperation with centers such as Ramon y Cajal Hospital, HM Sanchinarro University Hospital, and LYX Institution.
In addition to learning operations using the da Vinci robotic system, I improved my skills in endoscopic and reconstructive urology by actively participating in operations under the supervision of leading urologists in these fields: Professor Javier Romero Otero, Dr. Enrique Lledó García, Dr. Agustín Fraile Poblador, Dr. David Subirá Ríos, or Dr. Juan Ignacio Martínez Salamanca.
I would like to use the acquired experience and knowledge for the further development of our Clinic. In addition, I have entered into an agreement regarding cooperation between the Urology Clinic of the University Hospital No. 2. Dr. Jan Biziel in Bydgoszcz with the Urology Clinic in Madrid, in terms of participation in multi-center, international scientific research.
Professor Ignacio Moncada Iribarren accepted the invitation to visit the Urology Clinic in Bydgoszcz. In January 2024, we will have the opportunity to host Professor at our Hospital. During the stay, not only scientific meetings and lectures are planned, but also Professor Moncada will personally perform two demonstration robotic procedures in the field of oncological urology.
